Welcome to Edouard's apartment and Diane's house

With an almost
entirely gothic appearance, this private mansion is
inspired by the 'logis neuf' wing of the Château de
BLOIS, dating from the reign of LOUIS XII (1498-1514).
The majority of the decoration can be found within the
courtyard, with the staircase at the south-easterly angle
leading to the 'piano nobile' and the roofspace. Figures
carved out of the inside of this staircase reflect the
fantasy world of 15th century artists; a fool with his
bauble and his jester's hat, a character with a pointed
hat and vine leaves, chimeras and grotesque faces etc. The two upper
floors are spanned by ribbed vaults with sculpted corbels
opening out onto an arcade decorated with an elegant
network of flamboyant arcatures where the keystones have
retained their recesses. The courtyard
doorway is surmounted by an accolade archway with crocket
leaves. This house an Italian-style broken crest, flanked
by two pilasters for candelabras held by small corbels,
with an identical layout to the doorway of the Hurtaut
tower of the Château d'AMBOISE. The crowned letters
'L&A' for Louis XII and Anne of Brittany are sculpted
onto each side of the tip of the accolade, confirming, if
this were needed, the period of construction. As for the Logis
and the Lodge on the 4m high piano nobile, the remarkable
framework of beams with its linenfold sculpting creates
an exceptional space; the half-timbered partition walls,
the outer and inner woodwork and the exceptional
'Oratory' will transport you into another era: that of
the reign of the house of 'Valois', who succeeded the
'Capetians' and preceded the 'Bourdons'. "Rest easy during
your stay, my good ladies and beautiful maidens, for God
and the King will protect you" |
